individual imperialism
They created a better world
Why did we let it go?
Why are we letting it be taken?
It wasn't that long ago I knit this, but it feels so very long ago.
It felt like we were moving from the imperialism of countries to individual imperialism. (By which I mean ownership of so much of the world and the power it gives an individual over people’s lives. And the treatment of this as acceptable.)
Growing up in Canada life includes repeatedly being taught that is wrong for one country to colonize another and how much damage flows from it, but we seem to apply this limit less and less to individuals and what they can own.
And as colonization came before the nation-state got going, in some ways it feels like going back to the beginning.
There seems such a large chasm between: the morality of how we are supposed to treat people and what we economically reward, incentivize and almost require to be successful.
My work is about trying to escape the binary and find some balance. Some in-between. This moment feels like we are moving further and further from that balance.
