Tryin’ to be free

This piece was inspired by Hans Hartung’s work. And how his work, using a simple line or scratch, created this moment of rest. As if for that moment I do not have to do the work of existing, because in that moment I already do.

Here I began with charcoal. And then patterned it. I choose two yarns, almost the same colour but very different in fiber, and which made no sense as it had been the difference in colour on which I had worked in the past. But here a new way of working became obvious, instead of one yarn or the other up, here it was about creating empty spaces. Empty spaces that exist or disappear based on the light and line of sight. This piece is about how very different the things that allow life to occur and those that are really soul crushing obligations are, but how often, from the outside, they appear the same,.
