Twos

These pieces are about two words and how they relate.

I see my work as being very much about the binaries of life, the binaries humans place on others, on things that shouldn't really be binaries. It flows from the very basics of how knitting works (knit and purl), to how my mind processes and to how technology based on 0 and 1 has reformed so much of our existence.

After years of engaging in this practice, and working on wordier pieces in my hidden in the binary series, I started focusing down to two words and the link between them.

These pieces are about things that are called one thing but are really another. One thing that leans to being another. One word used to excuse another (helped or used, charity or mastery).

Or two words that define a whole problem or way of seeing the world (power and vulnerability, survival or surplus).

Others are whatever other way my mind put two words together.

Two yarns, two words, one connector.

One binary.

It began with Severe & Prolonged. This one I didn’t write. It is how a disability has to be defined to qualify under the Income Tax Act. And although it is not describing the disabled person, it feels like it is. And is a horrible way to define a human. I moved on to thinking about power & vulnerability and it just kept rolling.
